Sony has announced that AI-driven image upscaling is coming to the standard PlayStation 5, bringing a feature closely related to the one that has defined the PS5 Pro. Two games already support it: Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei.
The idea is the same as on the Pro. Instead of rendering every frame at full target resolution, a game can render at a lower internal resolution and let a machine-learning model reconstruct a sharper final image. That frees up GPU time, which developers can spend on higher frame rates, more visual effects, or simply a cleaner picture than traditional upscaling methods deliver.
Sony describes the standard console's version as AI-guided upscaling. The wording suggests it is modeled on the Pro's approach rather than being an identical feature, and the hardware gap between the two machines remains. The Pro has dedicated silicon built for this kind of work, so it's reasonable to expect the base console's results to differ in quality and in how much headroom they create. Sony's announcement doesn't spell out those technical differences, and independent comparisons will be needed to show how the two stack up in practice.
For players, the practical upside is straightforward. Owners of the original PS5 and the slim model may see sharper images and steadier performance in supported games without buying new hardware. It also gives a fresh reason to revisit Ghost of Yotei, and it makes Marvel's Wolverine an early showcase for the tech.
The bigger question is how widely it spreads. Two supported titles is a small start, and the feature's value depends on whether other studios adopt it. Upscaling has become a core part of console performance, and PC players have relied on similar tools for years. Bringing a comparable option to the base PS5 helps close that gap and extends the console's life as the generation continues.
Sony hasn't yet published a full list of upcoming supported games in the material announced so far. Expect more details, and plenty of side-by-side image analysis, as players start testing it.
