Gears of War: E-Day Launches Without Chainsaw Duels and Meat Shields, But The Coalition Says They're Not Gone
Xbox·October 3, 2026

Gears of War: E-Day went live yesterday for players who picked up the Premium Edition, Premium Upgrade Edition or Collector's Edition, and the early-access crowd wasted little time cataloguing what feels absent.
Two of the biggest omissions are among the most recognizable moments in the series. The chainsaw duel, the tense button-mashing standoff when two Lancer users collide, doesn't appear in the new game. Neither does the meat shield, the grisly tactic of grabbing an enemy and using them as cover while firing.
Both mechanics have been part of the franchise's identity since the original games, so their absence was spotted quickly and drew questions from longtime fans.
The Coalition has moved to calm those concerns. According to the studio, the features are "not gone from the franchise," a phrase that suggests the omissions are specific to E-Day rather than a permanent retirement of the mechanics. The studio hasn't framed it as a bug or a launch oversight, and it hasn't laid out whether the features could be patched in later or are simply being held back for future entries.
That ambiguity leaves room for interpretation. E-Day is a prequel set during the Locust War's earliest days, and a studio could have design reasons for trimming certain systems, whether to fit the tone, the pacing or the way combat is built around the new campaign. Still, fans of the series tend to be protective of its signature moves, and cutting two of the best known will keep the conversation going for a while.
For now, early adopters are playing without them, while everyone else waits for the wider release. Whether The Coalition has plans to restore either mechanic in an update, or intends to bring them back in a future game, remains to be seen.
