Disney Plays Down Epic Games Buyout Talk: 'Not Happening Right Now'

Disney has moved to cool speculation that it is shopping for Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite and the Unreal Engine. According to the company, talks about an acquisition are not happening "right now."

The rumor had been gathering pace after reports suggested the entertainment giant was interested in taking over Epic outright. Disney's response is a denial of current activity rather than a flat rejection of the idea, and the phrasing is worth noting. Saying something is not happening at the moment is a long way from ruling it out for good.

The two companies are already closely tied. Disney made a major investment in Epic in early 2024, putting in roughly $1.5 billion for an equity stake, with the stated goal of building a shared games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. Since then, Marvel, Star Wars and other Disney properties have shown up in the game in various forms, giving Disney a direct line to a huge, engaged audience that skews young.

That partnership is the main reason the buyout chatter feels plausible to many observers. Fortnite has evolved from a battle royale hit into a broad platform for creator-made experiences, concerts and brand tie-ins. For a company built on franchises and fan communities, owning that kind of space is an obvious draw. Epic's engine technology is also widely used across games, film and television production, which adds another layer of value.

There are practical hurdles, though. Epic is privately held and has long been controlled by founder Tim Sweeney, who has spoken repeatedly about keeping the company independent. Any deal would also come with a very large price tag, given how highly Epic has been valued in past funding rounds. Epic has also been fighting high-profile legal and business battles with platform holders over app store rules, and those fights are central to how the company sees itself.

For now, the situation is simple. Disney remains a significant partner and shareholder, but it says it is not negotiating to buy the company. Whether that changes will depend on how the Fortnite collaboration evolves and on whether Epic's leadership is ever willing to give up control.
