Kojima Unsure Physint Will Even Reach PS5 After Sony Exit
Industry News·September 29, 2026

Hideo Kojima has admitted that two basic questions about his next game remain open: whether Physint will ever release on PlayStation 5, and whether it will be built on Sony's Decima engine.
The comments come after one of the more surprising publishing shake-ups of the year. In June, Sony abruptly decided to pull back from publishing Physint, the tactical espionage project widely seen as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear. Kojima then persuaded Xbox to step in, and Microsoft's platform is now funding and publishing the game.
That handover left plenty of loose ends. Decima is Sony's in-house technology, and it powered both Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 at Kojima Productions. With Sony no longer the publisher, it is unclear whether the studio can keep using the engine, or whether it even wants to. Kojima says that decision hasn't been made.
The PS5 question is just as unsettled. Sony's departure would normally make a PlayStation release look unlikely, but Kojima stopped short of ruling anything in or out. For a studio whose fan base has long been tied to PlayStation, that uncertainty matters.
Kojima has been discussing the change in a series of remarks touching on several topics around the split. The overall picture is of a project in transition, with its platform strategy and technical foundations still being worked out under a new backer.
For now, players should treat any PS5 version of Physint as unconfirmed. Xbox holds the publishing rights, and the technology choices that would shape a multiplatform release are still undecided. More clarity will likely arrive once Kojima Productions settles on an engine and Microsoft outlines its platform plans.
