Control Resonant Skips Yellow Paint on Purpose, Director Says

Control Resonant is taking a different route from much of the modern open-world crowd, and its director says that is entirely by design. The game will not splash yellow paint across ledges and doorways to nudge players along, and it will not always mark the next objective for them.

According to the director, leaving out the familiar visual crutch was a "conscious decision" by the development team. The goal is to give players room to look around, get a little lost and build their own mental map of the world, rather than following a trail of markers from one point to the next.

The comments land at a moment when handholding in big-budget games is under growing scrutiny. Many recent open-world releases lean on waypoints, glowing highlights and painted climbing surfaces so players rarely stall. Critics argue that approach can turn exploration into a checklist, with attention fixed on a compass instead of the environment.

Resonant appears to be betting that the opposite pays off. When a game does not tell you exactly where to go, level design has to do the communicating through landmarks, lighting, sightlines and layout. That puts more weight on the world itself, and more trust in the player to read it.

It is a fitting philosophy for the Control series, which has always leaned into unsettling spaces that reward curiosity and attention. Remedy's earlier work built its identity around shifting architecture and a world that felt strange to navigate, so a hands-off approach to guidance fits the tone.

There is, of course, a balance to strike. Less guidance can frustrate players who just want to keep moving, and the studio will need to make sure the world is readable enough that confusion feels like discovery instead of a dead end. The team has not framed the choice as a rejection of accessibility, only as a decision about how much the game should explain.

For players tired of following markers across the map, the message is a welcome one. Control Resonant wants you to look up from the minimap and figure it out yourself.
