Wardogs Early Access Review: Steep Learning Curve, Deadly Skies

Getting into a Wardogs match is harder than it sounds, and that's before a single shot is fired. In our early access review, it took four attempts just to land a parachute jump successfully, and the failures were instructive.

The first try ended when the chute opened far too early, leaving the player drifting slowly through the air like a target on a shooting range. One of the many sharpshooters scattered across the battlefield picked them off before their boots touched the ground. The second attempt went the other way. Pulling the ripcord too late meant a dramatic crash into the dirt, a camouflaged take on a cartoon coyote meeting the desert floor.

The third jump was the most humbling. The cord was pulled only slightly too late, but as it turns out, "slightly too late" and "very too late" lead to the same result when gravity is involved. Only on the fourth drop did the timing come together.

That opening sequence works as a fair summary of what Wardogs asks of its players. The game does not hold your hand, and the margin for error is thin from the moment a match begins. Timing, positioning and awareness matter immediately, and the sniper-heavy map means anyone who lingers in the open, in the air or on the ground, is likely to be punished for it.

That will appeal to players who enjoy tense, high-stakes shooters where every decision carries weight. It may also put off anyone hoping for a gentler onboarding, since early access players are effectively learning through repeated failure. The parachute drop is just the first lesson in a game that treats mistakes as expensive.

As with any early access release, Wardogs is still a work in progress, and its long-term appeal will depend on how the developers refine the experience over time. For now, it offers a demanding, sometimes comedic, and often unforgiving take on battlefield combat. Expect to die a few times before you even get to fight.
