Resident Evil Requiem Almost Went Online, Producer Reveals

Resident Evil Requiem was not always the single-player horror experience fans know. According to producer Masachika Kawata, the game was first planned as an online title, a direction the team later abandoned in favor of a tighter focus on horror.

The series built its reputation on tense, claustrophobic survival horror, where isolation and dread do much of the work. A multiplayer or online-driven design would have moved the franchise a long way from that identity, which may explain why the team chose to step back from the concept.

Kawata's comments offer a rare look at how a major release can change direction during development. Big franchise games often go through several rounds of planning before their final shape settles, but producers rarely talk about the ideas that were cut. Hearing that an online version was on the table adds a new layer to the story of how Requiem came together.

The reveal does not change what players will get. Requiem is built around horror, and the decision to drop the online concept means the team could concentrate on pacing, atmosphere, and the kind of tension the series is known for. Fans curious about the road not taken will have to rely on the producer's account, but the choice itself is a clear signal of where Capcom wanted the game to land.
