Paramount Is Developing a Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Movie

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie based on Cyberpunk 2077, the open-world role-playing game from Polish studio CD Projekt Red. The project is at an early stage. The report does not say who is writing or directing it, who might star, or when it could reach theaters.

The 2020 game is set in Night City, a crime-ridden metropolis where corporations often hold more power than the government. It grew out of Mike Pondsmith's tabletop Cyberpunk role-playing game, and it has a long history of its own. The game had a notoriously rough launch, but years of patches and updates helped rebuild its reputation, and the property has expanded well beyond the original release.

The most visible previous step was Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the 2022 anime produced by Studio Trigger for Netflix. It was well received and introduced the setting to many viewers who had never played the game. A feature film would be a different kind of bet, because it would have to draw in audiences who know nothing about Night City.

Early adaptation announcements often change. Projects can stall, move to a different studio, or take a new direction before filming begins. Until Paramount or CD Projekt Red confirms more details, this is best read as a first step rather than a finished plan.
