Krafton Cancels PUBG: Black Budget Less Than a Year After Reveal

Krafton has confirmed it is ending development of PUBG: Black Budget, the extraction shooter spin-off it revealed close to a year ago. The announcement came today and marks a quick end for a project that never got far beyond its initial pitch.

Black Budget was meant to take the PUBG name into the crowded extraction shooter space, a genre where games like Escape from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown and Arc Raiders have already built loyal audiences. Krafton positioned it as a way to broaden the franchise beyond the battle royale format that made it famous.

The cancellation is another setback for the PUBG brand's side projects. Krafton has now pulled the plug on a second game carrying the PUBG label, which suggests the company is struggling to turn its flagship name into new hits outside the core battle royale. The less-than-a-year lifespan between reveal and cancellation also points to a project that likely faced internal doubts about its direction or market fit.

For Krafton, the move looks like a pruning of its portfolio. The publisher has been investing heavily across several studios and genres, and shutting down a project early can limit sunk costs when a game is not coming together. Still, it is a public stumble, especially since the game was announced with fanfare only months ago.

The core PUBG: Battlegrounds experience is not affected by the decision, and the main game continues to receive live updates. Players hoping for a PUBG-flavored extraction experience will have to look elsewhere for now.

Krafton has not outlined what will happen to the team that worked on Black Budget, and it remains to be seen whether any of the game's ideas will be recycled into other projects.
