GTA 6 Wants Escaping the Cops to Feel Like a Hit-and-Run

Rockstar has shared more detail on how GTA 6 handles police pursuit, and the takeaway is that escaping the law should feel like a getaway rather than a chase you simply outrun. In an interview with IGN ahead of the Netflix Extended Look in August, head of development and co-studio head Rob Nelson walked through a 30-minute gameplay demo set in the sunny state of Leonida.
The demo opens in a safehouse that Jason and Lucia do not own. Rockstar stresses that they are staying in someone else's home. From there, Nelson takes Lucia downtown, where an expanded version of the NPC interaction system first seen in Red Dead Redemption 2 governs how citizens respond. These encounters go well beyond insults or drawn guns. Eavesdropping on a conversation for too long can get you called out, and following a passerby through his daily routine can turn into a confrontation that can be handled in several ways.
When an NPC pulls a weapon on Lucia and the people around her, dispatch is called and a one-star wanted level appears. Leaving the search area clears it, and Nelson described several ways to do that. Rockstar says it wants players to have options. Situations can escalate quickly if you push them, but if you hit someone, flee, and avoid shooting, you will generally be fine. Nelson tied this to the story of a couple on the run.
Simply leaving the scene does not wipe your record. Stealing a car or beating a pedestrian raises the heat even when nobody dies. Police still know what you look like and what you were wearing, so you have to change your approach. Nelson showed how a pair of glasses and a baseball cap would not be enough, and that he would need a clothing store or his personal vehicle, which carries spare outfits in the trunk. Splitting up is another option if Jason and Lucia are traveling together. Nelson summed up the intent: "We're really trying to encourage this hit-and-run style of gameplay." He added that staying under the radar is the key, so long as you do not draw too much attention to yourself.
Rockstar has also pulled back from the power fantasy that defined GTA 5. Players can still start a rampage and take on a large number of officers, but that choice now comes with far more variables. The studio does not want the game to make players feel invincible.
GTA 6 is scheduled for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. According to reports, pre-orders have already reached close to 6 million, more than a month before launch.
