Gears of War: E-Day Is Built for Hardcore Players, Says Creative Director

With Gears of War: E-Day only days from release, The Coalition is being clear about how tough it expects the campaign to be. Asked which difficulty setting represents the intended experience, the studio's creative director didn't hedge: "I can tell you right now, it's Hardcore."

That is a familiar answer for longtime fans. In the original trilogy, Hardcore was the setting that treated enemies as a real threat and demanded proper use of cover, weapon choice and squad positioning, rather than letting players simply shoot their way through. Pointing to it as the baseline suggests the team wants E-Day to feel like the earlier games in more than just story.

E-Day launches on Xbox and PC on 1st October, and Xbox and The Coalition have been putting the single-player campaign front and center in the run-up. The game is a prequel that returns to the origins of the Locust scourge. Players take control of a younger, more innocent Marcus Fenix as he lives through the opening stretch of the end of the world alongside his friend and fellow soldier Dom Santiago.

Early hands-on impressions have leaned on how traditional the game feels. Our own preview found that its pacing, mechanics and setup read like a continuation of the original trilogy, which is an interesting trick for a story set before those events. The heavy, stompy movement and close-quarters cover combat that defined the series appear to be intact.

The difficulty comment fits that picture. Rather than reinventing the formula, The Coalition seems to be leaning into what made the first Gears games work, and it wants players to experience that at a level where mistakes have consequences. Newcomers and those who prefer a gentler ride will still have lower settings available, but the studio's message is that Hardcore is where the design is tuned.

Whether that approach lands will be clear soon enough. For now, anyone planning to jump in on day one might want to warm up their cover-to-cover instincts first.
