Fortnite's FNAF Skins Break Permanently When You Take Damage

Out of roughly 2,800 skins in Fortnite, very few do anything beyond looking good. The new Five Nights at Freddy's Set, featuring Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy, is one of the rare exceptions, and it brings a mechanic the game has not tried before.

The skins are what Fortnite calls reactive, meaning they respond to events in a match. Most existing examples are simple. Many music Icon skins light up when a song plays, and Heatwave PJ from the Chapter 7 Season 3 battle pass makes a sound when you score a kill. The FNAF animatronics go further. Each time you take damage while wearing one, pieces of the character model fall away, leaving it visibly battered.

The key difference is that the damage sticks. Healing does not repair the animatronic. It stays broken until you are eliminated or the match ends. Players who do not want it can switch the effect off in the locker, or go the other way and set the skins to always appear beat up.

Fortnite has flirted with damage reactions before, but never like this. Isaac Clarke's health bar flashes red, Synth's jacket glitches, and Spider-Punk flickers through different colors, yet all of those are temporary. There are also skins that change permanently based on kills, such as the Midas and Marigold outfits that turn gold. The closest comparison is Botch, the Dumb Ways to Die back bling, which looks wounded as your health drops. Its injuries disappear when you heal, though.

The design fits the license well. Worn, broken animatronics are a core part of FNAF imagery, and this lets one cosmetic cover both the clean and the damaged versions of each character. It is a small touch, but a clever one, and it hints at how much more room Epic has to make skins react to the chaos of a match.
