Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director: "I Did My Best" on Disc Release Push
Industry·October 4, 2026

Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, has responded to fans who want the upcoming Final Fantasy 7 Revelation on a full game disc. His answer was candid: he tried, and it was not enough to settle the matter.
Hamaguchi said he did his best to push for a proper disc release, acknowledging how much it matters to players who prefer to own their games on physical media. Fans have been vocal about the issue, with many hoping the trilogy's conclusion would sit on shelves next to the earlier entries.
The director framed the situation as a wider industry shift rather than a decision made in isolation. In his view, the business is heading toward a "future where physical media is essentially disc-less." That points to the growing trend of retail boxes that contain only a download code or a partial install, rather than the complete game on a disc.
His comments will likely land with mixed feelings. Collectors and players with limited internet access or storage have long argued that a disc should mean the whole game, playable without a huge download. At the same time, publishers have leaned more on digital distribution, where production costs for discs, shipping and retail stock are lower and updates are easier to manage.
Hamaguchi did not announce a change of plans, and his remarks suggest the final physical format is shaped by factors beyond the development team. Still, the fact that the director publicly said he argued for a disc shows how much pressure there is from the community on this point.
For now, players hoping to own Final Fantasy 7 Revelation physically will need to wait for Square Enix to detail exactly what the retail edition contains. Given the reaction so far, the format of that release is set to remain a talking point as the trilogy heads toward its finale.
