Discord Brings Back Age Checks, Promising Less Invasive Options After Backlash

Discord's age verification is back, and this time the company is trying hard to avoid a repeat of the uproar that forced it to hit pause earlier this year.

The chat platform postponed the original rollout in February after a wave of loud criticism from users worried about handing over sensitive personal information. Now the checks are launching again in a reworked form, and Discord is pitching the new version as a much gentler alternative to what it first proposed.

Co-founder and chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy says the updated system was built to be "the most privacy-preserving approach we could build." The key change, according to Vishnevskiy, is choice. Instead of funneling everyone toward a single intrusive method, users will get options for confirming their age that ask for less of their personal data.

The company has not framed the move as optional in spirit. Age assurance has become a growing regulatory pressure point for online platforms, and Discord, which hosts huge communities of teens and adults alike, is under the same scrutiny as its peers. That context helps explain why the feature returned rather than being shelved after February's backlash.

Still, trust is the real hurdle. Discord's community reacted strongly the first time around, and concerns about how verification data is collected, stored and used did not disappear during the delay. Promising a privacy-first design is one thing, and convincing a skeptical user base is another. Many players will want to see exactly what each verification option requires, and what happens to that information afterward, before they take Discord at its word.
