Cosplay Bryan From Resident Evil This Halloween With Off-the-Rack Gear

Halloween is around the corner, and if you want a costume that says "I survived Raccoon City," the courier Bryan from the new Resident Evil movie might be your best bet. Played by Austin Abrams, the character wears a look that is refreshingly grounded, which makes it easy to recreate.

According to Resident Evil News, director Zach Cregger and costume designer Caroline Fahrer kept the outfit rooted in the real world. That means most of it can be bought off the shelf. You will need RVCA fatigue pants, a deep yellow plaid shirt and a grey hoodie from New Yorker, and a pair of Nike Jordan Spizike low sneakers, which will need some customizing. For Bryan's medical bag, you could try asking a hospital for one. If that fails, the official movie popcorn bag is a workable stand-in.

The real work is in making it all look like it has been through hell. On screen, the thumbs on the gloves were cut off and replaced with stitching. To get the worn look on the pants, rub them down with sandpaper. Then comes the fake blood, which you can whip up in bulk with corn syrup and food coloring. Just be warned that it stays very sticky once it is on your clothes. Splash it on, and if you have willing friends, have them throw large water balloons at you while you sprint down an empty street for the full effect.

The costume also happens to be practical. It should keep you warm on a chilly October night, and it looks like it could survive a few nibbles from anyone suffering from a bad case of the T-Virus.

The movie itself is doing well. After two weeks in theaters, Resident Evil set the biggest opening weekend in the franchise's history and has passed $100 million at the North American box office. That beats the previous record holder, 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife, which made $60 million. It currently ranks as the fourth highest-grossing live-action Resident Evil film and is closing in on 2016's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the series leader at $312 million.

The film's impact on the games has been more muted. Sales of the Resident Evil games have seen only a "moderate" bump. Instead, the movie appears to have energized the existing fanbase and boosted engagement with the franchise in September.
