WoW: Forever Beta Keeps Breaking Its Own Population Cap

The World of Warcraft: Forever beta is proving far more popular than Blizzard expected. The studio has had to raise the beta's population cap multiple times since testing began, and the people building the game are running out of ways to describe the turnout.

Forever was the closing announcement of the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony. It is a modified take on WoW Classic that keeps the old-school gameplay and world while adding new changes and content, something Classic players have requested for years. The beta started September 17 with a level cap of 20 and runs through October 21. Full launch follows on November 4.

This is not an open beta. Access requires the $60 Skyborne Epic Pack, which also unlocks the new playable Skyborne race. Even with that paywall, demand overwhelmed the test environment right away. Senior game producer Tom Ellis posted a technical breakdown that traced many of the early problems to the beta environment not being built for that kind of load. Ellis has since deleted their X account.

Other Blizzard developers soon weighed in. WoW executive producer Holly Longdale said the beta was "setting records." Two days later, on September 19, she wrote that "launch will be wild…and we are here for it, come what may." On September 27 she announced another population cap increase, adding, "The wild ride continues."

Senior game designer Josh Greenfield, who often answers community questions on X, said the beta "has been crazy." He called it "the craziest numbers I've seen in 17 years working at Blizzard and almost 8 years on Classic," and added, "We've got something really special here."

Asked how Blizzard plans to handle login queues at launch, Greenfield pointed to the beta itself. He said the team found and fixed more problems on beta launch day than it would have in six months of internal testing.

Blizzard has not published exact beta numbers, so the scale is still a matter of developer comments rather than data. Forever also largely does away with traditional servers, which could help. Still, past WoW launches have had their share of rough days. If the beta is any guide, November 4 is going to be busy.
