Witcher Fans Have a Decade of Content Coming, and It Starts Today

The Witcher 3 Remastered arrives today, September 29, and it is only the first course in a long menu for fans of Geralt's world. Between an expansion, a new novel, a fresh trilogy and a few unconfirmed side projects, the franchise has a lot lined up.

Start with the remaster itself. It is a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the game, and it brings a batch of technical and graphical improvements. On top of the visual work, developer CD Projekt Red has reimagined the skill system, expanded photo mode, tuned combat and added a transmog feature for cosmetic gear. One caveat: the graphical overhaul is not universally seen as an improvement, so expect some debate about how it looks.

Next comes 2027, which is shaping up to be busy. Songs of the Past, a new expansion for The Witcher 3, was originally aimed at 2026 but was pushed back so the studio could polish it further. It is billed as Geralt's last ride before passing the torch. Players travel to Letten, the home of his bard friend Dandelion, and tackle a new main quest called "A Bed of Thorns." There Geralt meets Lilla, who looks like a potential love interest.

The same year could bring news from the books. Author Andrzej Sapkowski said at the Copernicon event in Torun, Poland, that he plans to finish the next Geralt of Rivia novel by the end of 2027, according to Wiedzminlandia via Redanian Intelligence. Nobody knows how soon after that it would reach shelves, and Sapkowski's plans could still shift, but a new book is officially on the horizon.

Then there is 2028 and The Witcher 4. The game puts Ciri in the lead as the playable character, with Geralt still set to appear. Its console release will probably not come on a disc, given Sony's move away from physical media, though some kind of physical edition is expected.

Beyond that, CD Projekt Red has laid out an ambitious plan for a new trilogy released within six years of The Witcher 4's launch. If the schedule holds, The Witcher 5 and 6 would land by the end of 2034. The studio has a habit of delaying its biggest games, so that timeline is far from guaranteed.

There are also a couple of wildcards. The studio is believed to be working on a multiplayer Witcher game, which has changed shape many times and has never been shown publicly. CD Projekt is also teaming up with Scopely on a mobile game based on one of its franchises. That title has not been confirmed as a Witcher game, and Cyberpunk is another possible candidate.

For now, the remaster is the main event. Whatever slips along the way, Witcher fans have plenty to look forward to.
