Sony Quizzes Developers on Ending PlayStation Discs

Sony may be testing the waters before it commits to a digital-only future. According to a new report, the company has sent developers "a bigger survey than they've sent almost ever before," asking what they think about ending production of disc-based PlayStation games.

The size of the questionnaire is what has people talking. Platform holders routinely poll partners on tools, policies and store features, but a survey described as unusually large suggests Sony wants a wide range of opinions on this particular decision. That has led to the obvious question of whether the company is having second thoughts.

It is worth being careful here. A survey is not a reversal. Companies often gather feedback to plan a rollout, to understand the impact on studios, or to prepare for pushback, and none of that means the plan is changing. Ending discs would put more control in the hands of platform holders, and that is a hard sell for anyone who remembers delisted games and closed digital storefronts.
