Sony Brings AI Upscaling to the Base PS5 With QSSR

Sony is bringing AI-powered upscaling to the standard PlayStation 5 with a new technology called QSSR. It addresses a gap that has existed since the PS5 Pro launched.

AI upscaling has become a core part of modern graphics pipelines. Rather than rendering every pixel at full resolution, a game renders at a lower resolution and a trained model reconstructs a sharper image. That frees up GPU power for higher frame rates and better visual settings. Sony's PSSR gave the PS5 Pro this ability, but the original PS5 was excluded because its GPU is weaker and could not run the same machine learning workload.

QSSR is the answer for that larger group of players. The source material gives few details about how it works. The point is that Sony is now offering an AI-based reconstruction option on hardware that previously had none.

The base PS5 is the version most players own, and many developers have struggled to hit stable frame rates and clean image quality on it in demanding games. Upscaling that goes beyond conventional techniques could help narrow that gap without a hardware upgrade.

Details are still limited. It is not yet clear which games will support QSSR, how its image quality compares with PSSR, or how much performance it costs on a standard console. Those answers will decide whether it is a real improvement for everyday players or a modest step. For now, the base PS5 is no longer shut out of the AI upscaling era.
