Rockstar Says GTA 6 Is Built to Be Wilder Than Real Life

Rockstar Games says the point of Grand Theft Auto 6 is to take the world we live in and push it well past believable. In an interview with Love Magazine, senior VP of narrative Rupert Humphries put it bluntly: if the studio is going to build a version of today's world, it has to be more over the top, more insane and more in your face. Otherwise, he argued, players could simply go outside and live in the real world.

Humphries described the setting as a pressure cooker for all kinds of insanity, and the leads are built to fuel it. Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval are polar opposites. Game writer Elizabeth Gauvey-Kern describes Lucia as an ambitious go-getter willing to do whatever it takes to win the life she dreams of, while Jason is a man bound by circumstance. Both are meant to be vulnerable, tough and flawed, sometimes right and sometimes wrong, and able to learn from one another. Their relationship, which follows a Bonnie and Clyde style story, is said to be deeper and more nuanced than the trailers suggest, and it will be central to the experience.

The gameplay also shifts the series formula. The old trick of ducking into an alley and waiting for your wanted level to fade won't cut it this time. Cops are smarter and more persistent, and actions carry consequences, so players will need to be more cunning before launching into a crime spree. The pursuit of fame and fortune will still be punctuated by shootouts, car chases and explosions.

With release set for November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the marketing push is ramping up. Advertising has already taken over a Miami stadium, and the NBA's Miami Heat will wear GTA 6-inspired jerseys against the Milwaukee Bucks on November 18, the night before launch. Rockstar also revealed a $400 Collector's Edition last week. It doesn't include the game itself, but it does come packed with trinkets tied to the franchise's more, shall we say, herbal side.
