Resident Evil Requiem's Title Hides a Hidden "Question," Says Producer Jun Takeuchi

Resident Evil Requiem's name seemed simple enough at launch earlier this year. Now producer Jun Takeuchi says there is more to it, and he is not ready to spell it all out.

Speaking in the Biohazard 30th Anniversary Special, as reported by GamesRadar, Takeuchi said the title was not picked only for the meaning of the word "requiem." He pointed to the spelling itself. REQUIEM contains "RE," which he described as a response, and also a "Q," for question. In his telling, the game offers both an answer and a question. What that question actually is, he said, will be explained at some point in the future.

The more concrete comments concerned where the franchise is headed. Takeuchi described a two-track strategy. The numbered games continue the present-day story, while the remakes let players revisit the past. According to him, those tracks are meant to converge. The remake series will eventually catch up to the era of the numbered entries, and the mechanisms for making that happen are already under consideration.

He said groundwork has been quietly laid since Resident Evil Village. References to Umbrella and Spencer, along with the return of Raccoon City in Requiem, were all described as preparation for a crossover. Takeuchi did not say what shape that crossover will take or when fans should expect it.

Requiem has already started bridging the gap in a small way. The game pairs longtime hero Leon S. Kennedy with newcomer Grace Ashcroft as co-leads, putting a classic character alongside a fresh face.

As for what is actually on the way, the only officially confirmed Resident Evil game in development is Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Code: Veronica. It has no release date yet.

The franchise is also doing well beyond games. The Resident Evil film directed by Zach Cregger has passed $100 million at the domestic box office and $208.3 million worldwide.

For now, Takeuchi's comments are more tease than explanation. The wordplay in the title remains unresolved, and the crossover plan is stated as intent rather than a detailed roadmap. But the message to fans is clear: Capcom is thinking about how to merge the series' two timelines, and Requiem is being positioned as a step in that direction.
