Nintendo Wins £3.4m Judgment Against Ex-Reddit Moderator "Archbox"

Nintendo has secured another big legal win against the piracy scene. A US District Judge has granted the company a default judgment of roughly £3.4 million ($4.5m) against James Williams, a former Reddit moderator who went by "Archbox" online.

The ruling was a default judgment, which means Williams did not respond to the lawsuit at all. With no defence filed, the court sided with Nintendo over its allegations of Nintendo Switch piracy, and the award followed without a contested trial.

Williams was previously known for his role as a moderator on Reddit, where he was part of the community around Switch hacking and emulation. Nintendo's case centres on claims that he was involved in facilitating piracy of the console.

The size of the award is notable, though collecting it is another matter. Default judgments are common in cases where a defendant cannot be reached or chooses to ignore proceedings, and actually recovering money from an individual can be difficult. Nintendo has not indicated how it plans to enforce the ruling.

The case fits a pattern. Nintendo has been increasingly aggressive in going after people it says enable or profit from piracy of its hardware and games, pursuing site operators, sellers of modified devices and figures in the hacking community. Large damages awards like this one serve as a warning to others, even when the payout itself may never fully materialise.

For the wider Switch community, the message is clear: Nintendo is willing to take individuals to court and seek serious sums, and ignoring a lawsuit does not make it go away.
