Modern Warfare 4 Double XP Tokens Will Only Tick Down During Matches

Activision has made a player-friendly tweak to one of Call of Duty's longest-running annoyances. In Modern Warfare 4, double XP tokens will only burn down while you are actually playing a match, rather than draining in real time the moment you activate them.

The change applies from launch and will continue afterward, according to the publisher. It follows the announcement, just days earlier, of a skin off toggle for Warzone, and it fits a run of small quality-of-life adjustments aimed at the community.

Anyone who has played Call of Duty in recent years knows the old problem. You pop a token, get pulled away by work, dinner or a long lobby wait, and come back to find half your boost gone without a single kill to show for it. Time spent in menus, loadouts and matchmaking all counted against you.

Counting down only during matches means the token measures play time and not clock time. A 30 minute boost should now deliver 30 minutes of actual gameplay, which makes them far more useful for grinding weapon levels, battle pass tiers and camo challenges.

The move is described as unprecedented for the franchise, and it removes one of the more common frustrations tied to the series' progression systems. Double XP has long been a staple of events, bundles and seasonal rewards, so a fairer timer should be welcome to casual players who cannot spend hours online in one sitting.

Activision has not detailed every edge case. It is not yet clear how the timer will treat time spent in private matches or training modes, or whether tokens earned in other Call of Duty titles will follow the same rules. Those details will likely become clearer closer to and after release.

For now, the headline is simple. If you are in a match, your token is ticking. If you are not, it is not. After years of boosts quietly expiring in the background, that is a small change many players will be glad to see.
