Modders Bring Skate 2 Tricks and Minecraft Worlds to Modern Warfare 2

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is getting a strange second life. Modders have built a pair of mods that turn the 2009 shooter into a skate park and a blocky sandbox, and videos of both are spreading fast.

The skateboarding mod borrows its mechanics from Skate 2. In a clip shared by a creator known as Chasm, operators kickflip, grind rails and eat pavement across familiar maps. One sequence shows a spectacular faceplant on Rust, another has a skater grinding a rail on Terminal, and a third follows a board through the streets of Karachi.

The second mod, showcased by a user named Kiyy, drops the player into a Minecraft world with a custom loadout. The footage runs as a Free-for-All match. The player cycles through several Modern Warfare 2 weapons before settling on the Spas-12 shotgun and blasting Minecraft's pigs and sheep.

Whether these projects survive is an open question. It is uncertain if Activision will move to shut them down, especially given the copyright issues involved with mixing in another publisher's game and mechanics. For now, both the Minecraft and Skate 2 mods can be downloaded from GitHub. A theater mode is also reportedly in development, which would let players watch and edit clips from their matches.

The timing is handy for fans waiting on the next entry. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC. It will include a full campaign, multiplayer, and the return of Infinity Ward's DMZ extraction mode. Until then, the 17-year-old classic is proving it still has room for some very odd experiments.
