Helldivers Movie Delayed to June 2028, Alan Ritchson Confirmed as Lead

The road to the big screen for Helldivers just got a little longer. Sony Pictures has shuffled its upcoming release calendar, and the adaptation of the co-op shooter has been pushed from its original November 10, 2027 date to June 9, 2028.

The new slot lands at the start of the summer box office season, which could be read as a vote of confidence from the studio. Summer is traditionally where studios park their biggest event films, and Sony appears to see Helldivers as one of them.

There is a flip side, though. The delay adds roughly seven extra months to a wait that was already long, and gaming trends move fast. Helldivers 2 launched in 2024 on PlayStation 5 and PC to strong reviews, then hit a new peak of popularity after arriving on Xbox Series X with cross-platform play. By mid-2028, the question is whether that momentum will still be there, particularly for a live-service game where player attention can shift quickly.

The casting picture has also become clearer. Sony has confirmed an earlier report that Reacher star Alan Ritchson will take a leading role as one of the soldiers defending Super Earth against waves of alien creatures and other interstellar threats. He steps into a project that previously had Jason Momoa attached, though the Aquaman and A Minecraft Movie actor left earlier this year.

Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin remains in place as director. Beyond Ritchson, no other cast members have been announced, so the rest of the squad is still to be revealed.

The original Helldivers arrived in 2015, but it was the sequel's breakout success that pushed the franchise toward Hollywood. For now, fans will have to hold the line a bit longer before the Helldivers movie drops in.
