GTA 6's Jason and Lucia: How Rockstar's Leads Have Changed Since 2023
GTA 6·October 2, 2026

Grand Theft Auto 6 is almost here, and the two characters at the center of it have spent years in the public eye. Jason and Lucia, the criminal duo leading Rockstar's return to Vice County, were first shown in the December 2023 reveal trailer, and the way they have been presented since then tells its own story about how the game took shape.
That first trailer introduced Lucia as the more immediately recognizable face, opening on her in a prison setting before cutting to the pair on the run together. Jason appeared more sparingly, a laid-back figure in the Florida-inspired setting. The footage was rough around the edges by design, a teaser meant to sell tone and romance rather than polish.
Over the following releases, the characters were filled out. Later marketing leaned into the partnership dynamic, framing the two as Bonnie and Clyde-style partners in crime who rely on each other as the stakes rise. Character models, lighting and facial animation looked noticeably more refined as development progressed, and the wardrobe and styling of both leads became sharper and more distinct.
The comparison matters because Rockstar has long used its protagonists as the emotional anchor of its open worlds. For the first time in the main series, a woman is a playable lead, and the studio has positioned the pair as co-protagonists rather than a lead and a sidekick. How that plays out in the story is something players will only fully see once they are in the game.
Visually, the gap between the 2023 reveal and the finished product is a reminder of how long this project has been in motion. Fans have dissected every frame of every trailer, and the side-by-side differences in skin detail, clothing, hair and expression show a game that has been steadily refined in public view.
With release now close, expect the conversation to shift from trailers and comparisons to what Jason and Lucia are actually like to play. That is the part no gallery of images can answer.
