GTA 6 Rebuilt Rockstar's Weather From Scratch, Hurricanes Included
GTA 6·October 1, 2026

Red Dead Redemption 2 set a high bar for virtual weather, with punishing winds and rain that soaked the whole screen. Rockstar Games apparently decided that wasn't enough. According to the studio, the weather technology behind Grand Theft Auto 6 has been rebuilt rather than simply extended.
Rockstar describes the work as a re-engineering of its weather system, with the goal of reaching "a sense of scale we haven't felt before." The headline addition is hurricanes, which fits the game's Florida-inspired setting of Leonida and its Vice City hub. Storms of that kind are a defining feature of the real-world region, and they give the studio a natural way to reshape the world in dramatic fashion.
Heavy rain is part of the package too, along with gentler atmospheric touches such as rainbows. Rockstar also points to what it calls "vertiginous cumulonimbus clouds," the kind of tall, anvil-topped storm formations that dominate a sky before a downpour. The wording suggests the clouds are meant to read as genuinely enormous structures on the horizon, not flat backdrops.
The details are light on specifics. Rockstar hasn't laid out how hurricanes will behave in play, whether they arrive as scripted set pieces or emerge dynamically, or how they might affect driving, combat and NPC behavior. Those questions matter for a game built around vehicles and chaos, where a wall of rain or wind could change how a chase or shootout plays out.
Still, the direction is clear. Rockstar has long treated environmental detail as a selling point, and RDR2's lighting, snowfall and mud remain reference points for open-world design years after release. Rebuilding the weather system rather than reusing it signals that the studio sees atmosphere as central to GTA 6, not a cosmetic layer on top.
For players, the promise is a world that feels larger and more volatile, where the sky itself can become the main event. Whether the final game delivers on that ambition will be clear once more of it is shown in action.
