Gears of War: E-Day Leans Hard Into Gore, and Players Are Here for It
Shooters·October 4, 2026

Gears of War: E-Day has found a sizable audience before its general release, helped by positive early reviews and strong launch-weekend player numbers. A big part of the draw is how the game feels to fight in.
According to the developers, the gore is no accident. They say they made a "big investment" in it after sensing that longtime fans had become a bit desensitised to the series' violence. The aim was to make each kill land harder than it has in past entries.
In our review, we called E-Day's combat the tightest the franchise has ever been. The moment-to-moment shooting is sharpened by some inventive thinking around the series' notorious weapons, and the kills themselves are wet, crunchy and satisfying. The result is a combat loop that gives players a gushing release of tension every time an enemy goes down.
It is an interesting design philosophy. Gears has always been defined by chainsaw bayonets and visceral executions, but escalating that formula risks tipping into noise. By treating gore as something to be tuned rather than simply amplified, the team appears to have found a way to make the brutality feel fresh again, at least judging by early player reaction.
With the full release still ahead, the numbers suggest E-Day is off to a confident start. If the early buzz holds, the series' return could be one of the stronger shooter launches of the year, and its approach to violence will likely be part of the conversation.
